UPDATE 2023

Poppycock is not being developed at the present moment due to all of us being busy with other work. The game's version is not the latest and is not currently in a fully functional state. For now, think of this as more of a concept of what could be. We may finish the game in the future, but right now we are prioritizing other things.

What is Poppycock?

Poppycock is a Gameboy microgame collection currently being developed in GB Studio. Initially, the project was started for a game jam, however, due to time constraints, it was never completed. To nobody's surprise, game development is really hard, and so is burnout. Now though, we finally decided to release a short playable demo to showcase the fruits of our efforts. The finished version of Poppycock will feature various nonsensical games which you can pick up and play for short periods. Although that day may not come for a while, we hope that everyone will get to experience our vision for this game.

Controls

For PC, use the Arrow Keys and Z
For Mobile, use the A button to mash and the B button to jump.

It was neat, but too short to even be called a “demo”

I definitely enjoyed the color palette and spritework, but I would say that even the current micro games need work before implementing more.

I’m not trying to nitpick here because this genuinely does look really cute and promising, but even on the first microgame I was left a little confused. Although the directions said to jump with Z, it turned out that the jump button was X. Even though it didn’t take long for me to figure out, it was still confusing because the microgame right afterwards was controlled with Z. Would be nice to have the buttons stay consistent or at least be informed when they aren’t! I was also a little confused that the main character ran backwards, and couldn’t tell if that was a glitch or not.

The second microgame was a little confusing for me too. I was mashing the Z button, but I couldn’t actually tell if I was doing it right since the wheel didn’t have any animation to it. Only once the microgame ended did I realize I had done it right. It was fine, I guess, but lacked any visual feedback or flare that might’ve left an imprint on me

Either way, I think that both of these microgames could be greatly improved by some audio feedback/tweaks for sure! I really liked what I saw here, and can only imagine how fantastic it’ll be when it’s complete (or at least has a little more added)

I also cant stress the importance of hectic fun music enough in a microgame series, because that’s the stuff that’ll really get you into the chaotic mood! It will definitely help with the overall vibe of the game for sure!!

last but not least, I wasn’t really sure what the whole “opening animation” was. All I made out of it was that it was a circle that burst into jam maybe? Not really sure how it tied into the game, but I thought it was sort of cute the way it opened up the game.

Overall, this has a lot of promise, and I’ll definitely be checking back in on it from time to time to see what’s been added. I genuinely enjoyed the vibe of what’s been created, despite its shortcomings. I’m sure in no time it’ll be great, maybe even rivaling warioware! With that being said, I hope to see some great new content soon enough!! I’ll be looking forward to it!

Thank you for your feedback! This kind of stuff is really good to know, and we're already hard at work on some of the things that you've listed in this comment. The first changes reflected will probably be more polished versions of the microgames. With the release of GB Studio 3.0, we have more creative freedom due to the addition of larger sprites. Most of this is a process of trying things out, adjusting them, learning from them until we finally hit that sweet spot. Comments like yours are seriously super motivating and encouraging, it's really refreshing to hear that people are excited to see the growth and progress of our game! That being said, we'll keep working on the game in the coming months and releasing updates in addition to developer logs. We hope you look forward to it!

very cute, looks promising nice art and animations. needs music, sound effects and more content. I look forward to seeing how this grows. :)

Thank you!! Music and SFX are definitely coming in the future, possibly in one of the later updates. In the meantime expect more microgames/difficulties to be added :)
